I can still remember my first bra. A sweet little introduction into the world of bras. I didn’t need it; I wasn’t a young woman who developed breasts of any mention until well into my 30’s, but I desperately wanted one. Back in those days, the first bra of choice was made by the brand Lovable - it was essentially two triangles of a satin like fabric, it fastened at the front and had tiny little adjustable straps. I loved it. I still love that bra. I remember buying it in black and feeling oh so grown up and gorgeous. I would still be wearing it if they still made it. It was, essentially, a bralette and I have never been happier to see a garment from my teenage years make a comeback.
So, what the heck is a bralette anyway and why should you have at least one or two in your lingerie wardrobe?
Unlike underwire bras, and even their more structured non-wired counterparts, a bralette is a casual and comfortable take on a soft cup bra. Generally unlined, unstructured, unpadded and always wire free, a bralette is like a summer vacation for your breasts. It’s the bra version of peeling off your skinny jeans at the end of the day and pulling on your favourite pair of grey tracksuit pants. Bralettes have come a long way from the flimsy little numbers of the 80’s however. Companies like Wacoal and Amoena have heard the chorus from women of all sizes ready to fling off their underwire bras and have answered that call with a range of bralettes that will bring that “ahhhhh” feeling.
As our aesthetics change to match our lifestyle changes, the return of the bralette to support us through pandemic life couldn’t be more timely. Shopping online for a bralette is far easier than navigating the sometimes overwhelming task of finding the correct underwire style without the benefit of a trained fitter to guide you. Bralettes are most often sized by band, so a good rule of thumb is to look for your regular bra band size (for example a 12 would be a medium, a 14 a large) then finding the style that will best support your cup size. Whether you lean towards a more ‘athlesiure’ look, minimalistic and smooth, or a little bit sexy, there’s a bralette to meet your needs.
Don’t get me wrong, a great underwire bra that fits like a dream still has a very important place in our lives. The right bra can make or break your outfit. But when you’re working from home, stretched out on the couch binge watching TV, or just want to feel gently supported and ‘almost’ bra free, then give the bralette a try.
